Study: Falling Asleep In Christ

This lesson is about death, from the Christian perspective. People avoid discussing such a sad event, but as Christians, is our departure from this world really such a sad thing? Should we, as Christians, look forward to our departure from this world or should we fear it?

Everyone will physically die…

a) Read Hebrews 9:27. Man is ___________________ for death.

b) Read 1 Kings 2:1-2. How did King David’s describe his coming death?

There are only three people in history that have never died:
Enoch – Genesis 5:21-24 and Hebrews 11:5.
Melchizedek – Hebrews 7: 1-3, 8.
Elijah – 2 Kings 2:11-12, 15-18

And those who are alive when Jesus returns…

1 Thessalonians 4: 14-17 says,
“We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words."

Fearing death…

Fearing death is natural. It’s the fear of the unknown. We’ve never been there before; But Jesus sets us free from that fear.

a) Regarding the fear of death, Hebrews 2: 14-15 says:

“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too (Christ) shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”

b) Read Philippians 1:20-23 about the Apostle Paul’s attitude about death. Was it a negative attitude?

c) Knowing He would soon face death, read what Jesus prayed in Matthew 26:39.

Do the children of God really die?

a) Read John 5:24. How have Christians passed already from death to life?

b) In Matthew 22:32, Jesus quotes God as saying:
“‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Jesus explains that God is “not the God of the dead but of the living." God is the God of the “Living”. Living in what sense?

c) Read Luke 9:29-31. Where did Moses and Elijah come from? Didn’t Moses die long ago?

d) Read John 11:25-26. Jesus says that those who believe in Him will never die.

Is Jesus talking about the body or the soul not dying? Do you believe Jesus?

Being Asleep In Christ

a) In the following verses, Jesus refers to death as “sleep”:
Matthew 9:24
John 11: 11-14
Mark 5:39

b) Read Acts 7:59-60. How is the passing of Stephen described?

c) 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-15 says.

“Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.”

What is the term used for death in the above verses?

In conclusion, read the verses below:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 and 2 Corinthians 5: 1-10
